P.C. Barua directs this melodrama about gambling bum named Ratan (K.L. Saigal) who runs into the beautiful Shrimati (Jamuna), an errant wife of an abusive husband. They soon team up and start begging for donations for a fake charity. With the money, they rent an apartment and live together until Shrimati's wealthy father keels over, leaving his vast estate to her. Feeling like she must atone for her sins, she devotes herself to social work and adopts an orphan named Lakhia. Though she hires Ratan to teach the waif to read, he wants to live with her once again. Her gnawing guilt for her past sins makes her rebuff him. This film, along with Mehboob Khan's 1939 opus Ek Hi Raasta, proved to be extremely controversial for showing an unmarried couple living together.
