Political passions are no novelty in Turkey, which has known radical movements and near-revolutions almost continually since it became an independent state. In this movie, based on a popular play by Lutfu Usta, based on his own experiences. Senar Sen plays the cook, who works in the household of a rich family. Basically apolitical, he goes about his business of feeding the family and its servants in his normal manner, while growing ever fonder of the family maid, a young girl he treats as though she were his daughter. She has a boyfriend who is rabidly political who becomes a policeman. When, for reasons of his own, the cook poisons the household's vicious guard dog, everyone assumes the act was political and is somehow related to the maid's boyfriend, and she is dismissed. Director Basar Sabuncu's films have been shown around the world, and are very highly regarded.
