Starring, and written in collaboration with members of the bands “No Fixed Address” and “Us Mob,” Wrong Side of the Road is a kind of Australian reggae road movie. The band members play themselves, acting out incidents from their lives and those of their friends, linking a loose narrative line together with performances of fine songs with biting lyrics.
Subplots center on specific concerns of each band member—Vonnie’s boyfriend is in jail; Pedro is considering leaving the group; Les is searching for his Aboriginal roots—punctuated by run-ins with white authorities. The premise of the film is simple, 48 hours in the life of the band, but the indictment of white Australia is far-reaching. As a collaborative process, Wrong Side of the Road is an exemplary independent film, and one that rings true in spirit and form.
