Canadian waitress Marjie (Katya Gardner) is bored with her life and dissatisfied with her potential mates. After her grandfather is murdered, she volunteers to go to Albania for the funeral in place of her bedridden mother. There she is beguiled by the archaic manners and customs of the old country. More fascinating still is the figure of Zef (Micheline Lanctôt), whom she was told was her aunt, but who has been living for decades as a man. The two head into the mountains to find the killer.
