Tiengemeten is a Dutch island whose surface was once mostly underwater; in an ambitious land reclamation project, the island was raised, cleared and turned into dry land suitable for agricultural use. However, in the 1990s Dutch officials concluded that Tiengemeten had fulfilled its usefulness to farming, and it was decided to let the island return to a natural state. Filmmaker Digna Sinke decided to chronicle Tiengemeten's slow evolution back into a wilderness, and in her documentary Wistful Wilderness she assembles footage shot over more than ten years into a study of the territory as it reverts from farm land into an island governed only by nature. As Sinke and her crew capture the slow but constant change of Tiengemeten, the filmmaker also offers a glimpse at how the years bring changes to herself and her life. Wistful Wilderness was an official selection at the 2010 Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival.
