After she's discovered by a Hollywood agent in a Manhattan hotel, Seattle native Frances Farmer (Susan Blakely) rises to fame virtually overnight. Underappreciated by the studio machine that made her a star, Frances moves to New York to pursue more serious and challenging work. There, she meets and falls for radical playwright Clifford Odets (John Heard), and the two begin a doomed affair that sends her spiraling into what becomes a decades-long battle with alcoholism and schizophrenia.
