Based on the novel by Eden Philpotts, Widecombe Fair affords the modern viewer some fascinating glimpses of British rural life in the 1920s. Wyndham Standing plays a stern country squire who refuses to give his blessings to the romance between his daughter Marguerite Allen and raw-boned farmhand William Freshman. The young hero returns the favor by saving Standing from arrest when a valuable cache of jewels is stolen. This represents a regeneration of sorts for the young man, who was originally prepared to desert the heroine in her hour of need. Moore Marriott, best known as toothless old Harbottle in the Will Hay comedies of the 1930s, provides a few scattered moments of mirth as a drunken foreman.
