WWII was all of six weeks old when the 81-minute documentary Why This War? was distributed to American theaters. Actually, the conflict covered in the film is WWI, though it is implied that the errors made after the "War to End All Wars" led inexorably to the Second World War. Most of newsreel footage included herein is from British archives, and had previously been seen in the 1939 compilation Forgotten Men. In trying to be fair, the producers try not to lay the blame of the current crisis on any one nation, not even Germany. The film ends with a plea for sanity by a "Gold Star Mother" whose son perished on the battlefields of France in 1918.
