This World War I propaganda film offered just one reason why America was bound to win the war: General John J. Pershing. This biographical picture covers the life of Pershing (played as a youth by Harris Gordon and as an adult by Olaf Skavlan), from his boyhood to his days at West Point to his Cavalry days in Montana where he becomes known as "Black Jack" Pershing. His heroics lead him from San Juan Hill to the Philippines to Japan for the Russo-Japanese War. Appointed Brigade Commander by President Theodore Roosevelt (W.E. Whittle), he serves in the Philippines once again. After America's entry into World War I, Pershing becomes Commander of the American Expeditionary Force in France. Pershing's courage and tough discipline really did help win the war and after its end he became the Army's Chief of Staff. But, as the film was made in the middle of 1918, it ends with Pershing bravely facing his battles with the "Huns."
