To fight a gang that is looting wrecked trains, a railroad firm enlists the help of detective Whispering Smith (J.P. McGowan, who also directed). But when he discovers that Murray Sinclair, the gang's leader (Paul C. Hurst), is the husband of Smith's former sweetheart, Marion (Helen Holmes), he takes himself off the case. He resumes his investigation, however, when members of the gang kill his brother. Smith kills the man who murdered his brother and finds out that the gang is posing as the railroad's wrecking crew. When a bridge is burned down, the evidence points to Sinclair, but Smith, in order to save Marion's feelings, lies and saves him. This film was based on a novel by Frank Spearman, and if the ending sounds like an awful lot is left up in the air, it is; there was a sequel, Medicine Bend, which picked up where the first one left off.
