Although Eugene Palette was known in the 30s for his portly character roles, during the silent era, he was a handsome, well-muscled leading man. His physique was rarely better displayed than it was in this drama, where he plays a young fisherman of the French coast who is engaged to Yvonne, his childhood sweetheart (Lotta Grimes). But their romance is disrupted when worldly Parisian La Glou (Anna Luther) arrives in their little village. She has walked out on her husband (George Demerest) because he won't buy her the diamond necklace she desires. So instead she goes for a diamond-in-the-rough -- the fisherman, who is seduced by her beauty and sophistication. Yvonne, meanwhile, is sorely neglected. Eventually La Glou's husband shows up with the necklace and she leaves the fisherman flat. Heart-broken, he throws himself off a cliff. He survives the fall, however, and is nursed back to health by his mother (Lillian Hayward), and Yvonne. But after a while, La Glou decides to return to him. She shows up at his door to be greeted by his mother, who offers to take her, by rowboat, to the island where her son is staying. To keep La Glou from ruining his life any further, the mother makes a hole in the boat's bottom and it sinks, drowning both her and La Glou.
