Harry Handworth was the director and Octavia Handworth was the star of the 4-reel Excelsior production When Fate Leads Trump. The title bore but little relation to the film, which told the story of a smuggler and his son. Hoping that the boy will some day take over the "family business," the smuggler is sorely annoyed when his son decides to marry and raise a family. Under false pretenses, the father lures the wife and child to his lair, where he holds them prisoner, intending to kill them at a later date. The woman escapes and is rescued by a woodsman, who nurses her back to health. Having lost her memory, the heroine forgets all about her husband, her baby and her treacherous father-in-law and accepts the woodsman's marriage proposal. Years later, the woman's memory rushes back when she suddenly confronts her first husband, leading to a duel to the death between the two men in her life and a "discretion is the better part of honor" finale.
