A great many pre-WWI Pathe films were based on famous literary works. Most often, these books were written by long-dead authors, thereby saving the studio the necessity of doling out royalty money. One such Pathe release of 1910 was Werther, based on a novel by Goethe. Since the film apparently no longer exists, you will have to accept on faith the assertion made by Variety that the film was faithful to the novel. Apparently, the actors were drawn from the ranks of the Parisian stage, all of whom lent a touch of artistry to the proceedings.
