Filmmaker Marcelo Bukin chronicles the lives of children struggling to survive within a cycle of poverty and abuse in this short documentary. Poptun is a town in Guatemala where three children have been stripped of their innocence by terrible circumstances -- their parents are alcoholics who, rather than work, send their children out to earn a meager wage shining shoes and working odd jobs, bringing home their earnings under the constant threat of violence. Despite the cruelty of their parents and the ceaseless grind of their lives, the children strive to remain optimistic in the face of it all. Welcome to Poptun (aka Bienvenidos a Poptun) was screened in competition at the 2006 Chicago International Documentary Festival.
