The reviewer for Variety minced no words when he characterized the four-reel Voice of Satan as the worst picture of 1915 (and it was only March). The heroine, Sylvia, falls in with bad company and ends up in a house of ill repute. The cause of her downfall is a slimy white slaver named Eckhole, who hopes to benefit from Sylvia's various assignations with the local seafaring community. After several futile attempts to escape, Sylvia resigns herself to her fate, and apparently begins enjoying her "scarlet status." The man from Variety seemed less upset by the tawdry nature of the story line than by the fact that, at one point, the white heroine was seen dancing with -- horrors! -- a black man.
