Finland's contribution to the 1958 Karlovy Vary Film Festival was Vieras Mies. The title translates as "The Stranger," in reference to the film's protagonist, a handsome farmhand. Victimized by her drunken lout of a husband, the farmer's wife is understandably attracted to the new hired hand. The brutish farmer responds to this turn of events by murdering his wife's erstwhile lover -- suffering almost immediate retribution when he falls into a creek and drowns. The long-suffering wife takes comfort in the fact that she is carrying her lover's child.
