Margaret Ellis (Kitty Gordon) is the daughter of a judge (Frederick Warde) who lives near Calder college. Two men fall in love with her: Philip Bellamy, a college professor with an alcohol problem (Irving Cummings), and Bob Harding, a visiting New Yorker (George MacQuarrie). Bellamy is ambitious and he wants to explore some ruins in north Africa. So that he can hang onto Margaret, he convinces her to marry him and join the expedition. Harding goes along with them as well. During the expedition, booze gets the better of Bellamy, and as Margaret lies ill, he steals the last of the brandy. He also earns the animosity of Hassan, an Arab (Anthony Merlo), who leaves him buried under some ruins. Believing that Bellamy is dead, the party returns home. But Bellamy manages to emerge from the ruins and return to the college, just as a statue in his honor is being unveiled. Even though he is weakened from liquor and drugs, he still wants to win Margaret back, but Hassan shows up and puts him out of his misery. Now that she's a confirmed widow, Margaret and Harding are free to be together.
