The famous story of Englishman Bertie Cecil, who disgraced himself to save his younger brother, his flight into the Foreign Legion and his tragic romance with a Legionnaire's daughter, Cigarette, is told here in a mere three reels. Franklin Ritchie played Bertie, Louise Vale was Cigarette, Helen Bray was Lady Guinivere, with whom Bertie had an affair, and the ever-dependable Jack Drumier was Lady Guinivere's husband. Character actor Charles Mailes apparently had several roles, including Black Hawk, Bertie's chief officer, and the one who sentenced him to death. This was the first time the play (which was adapted from the Ouida novel) was filmed. Almost exactly a year after this picture came out, the Theda Bara version was released, which effectively wiped this one off the map.
