Not all is quite what it seems to be, either in nature or art, in this animated installation from artist and filmmaker Kelly Richardson. Twilight Avenger opens with a shot of a wooded landscape, full of green grass and tall trees. Suddenly an animal gambols into the frame, but it's not quite what anyone would expect -- while it looks like a deer, it's surrounded by a shimmering green aura and gives off a pulsing, unearthly glow. Is the forest home to radioactive wildlife? Is this some sort of alien stag from outer space? Or are we in a fantasy world that bears only certain superficial resemblance to our own universe? Twilight Avenger was originally exhibited by Richardson as an installation at the Birch Libralato Gallery in Toronto; she was later invited to present the piece at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival as part of a retrospective of her work.
