You certainly knew what you were paying for when entering a nickelodeon in 1909. For example, the title of Pathe's Training Bulls for the Fight told the whole story. The film opens as a herd of bulls is shepherded into a river, on the theory that there's nothing on earth more ferocious than a wet bull. The disgruntled toros are then chased through town by a taunting crowd before being penned up in a large outside enclosure. Here they are further tormented with rocks, sticks and knives. All of this is designed to build up the bulls' ferocity for the benefit of the brave toreadors.
