This is a riveting, creepy documentary about 22-year-old Masaya Muraishi's search for the father who abandoned him as a child. Unable to understand himself or his past, the bisexual Muraishi roams Tokyo's winding lanes and alleyways cruising for middle-aged men. In his free time, when he's not attending film school, he cuts himself with a knife until he bleeds. The pain confirms that he is alive, he explains in a voice-over. He also frequently visits his beloved mother, who is a recovering alcoholic, and his stepfather, with whom he has never established an emotional bond. When he does actually catch up with his biological father, his dad offers little as far as an explanation or apology. Fatherless was screened at the 1999 Sarajevo Film Festival.
