One of the most exciting crime thrillers of its era, Vincenzo Denizot's Tigris depicts a cat-and-mouse game between a renowned detective, Roland (Alessandro Bernard), and the criminal gang led by the man called "Tigris" (Edoardo Davesnes, who also plays the roles of Leblanc and Il Commissario). The script is filled with vividly drawn characters and action, and laced with amazingly modern touches. Among the most striking of the latter are the odd little parallelisms between the pursuer and the pursued, such as a hunt for the criminal played against the backdrop of a game of chess, and other devices intended to generate suspense on several levels at once. The result is one of the most enjoyable and entertaining movies of the silent era, and one that has scarcely aged at all in its allure to modern viewers.
