The six-reel documentary Through Central Africa was the handiwork of British explorer James Barnes. Culling his film from nearly 21 reels of exposed celluloid, Barnes wove an exciting account of his recent journey into the Dark Continent. According to contemporary reviewers, many of the animal species appearing in the film were being shown on screen for the very first time. Likewise noteworthy was an exciting canoe trip through the rapids of the Ituri River. For its premiere New York showing, Through Central Africa was accompanied by a slide presentation and a live lecture, delivered by James Barnes himself.
