Maratha filmmaker Bhalji Pendharkar directs this swaggering historical drama about love and honor set in a fictional 17th century kingdom ruled by Shivaji (Nansaheb Phatak). When Shivaji's son, Shambhaji (Chandrakant), is maimed during a tiger hunt, he is nursed back to health by the beautiful Kamala (Sumati Gupte), with whom he falls in love and eventually kidnaps. When Kamala staggers home, her father refuses to take her back, and instead commits suicide out of shame. Appalled at his son's actions, Shivaji throws him in prison. When Kamala is kidnapped again -- this time by her would-be groom Yeshwantrao -- Shambhaji busts out of prison to rescue her. Unfortunately, she gets killed in the ensuing melee. This film was later remade in 1963 by Madhav Shinde, while that same year Pendharkar made a sequel to this original film.
