Helen Gardner, one of the first film actresses to manage her own movie studio, was both star and producer of the three-reel The Wife of Cain. The film begins with a reenactment of the Biblical story of Cain and Abel, then jumps forward several years as the conscience-stricken Cain wanders aimlessly through the Land of Nod. Here he meets and falls in love with Save (Gardner), the daughter of Omar, the huntsman. Winning Save away from her previous suitor, the overlord of Nod, Cain proves to be a loyal and worthy husband. In fact, it is through Save's love that he is able to find redemption for the murder of his brother Abel (at least, according to this film).
