Bengali filmmaker Nemai Ghosh directs this terrifically influential, IPTA supported, loosely structured drama about a group of farmers from East Bengal (now Bangladesh) forced to flee to Calcutta after the tumultuous and bloody Partition in 1947. Using all non-actors, no make-up, and a concealed camera for shooting in the streets, and -- most shockingly for the average Indian filmgoer at the time -- no songs, this film has a distinct documentary feel not unlike Italy's Neo-Realists. Future parallel cinema master Ritwik Ghatak stars.
