The first in a series of stunt-oriented melodramas starring Richard Talmadge, a German-born former double for Douglas Fairbanks, The Unknown was produced for the still lucrative states rights market by poverty row entrepreneur Phil Goldstone. Talmadge (né Metzetti) played "himself," the son of a ruthless businessman (Mark Fenton, who moonlights as The Unknown, a champion of the poor and downtrodden. Old Parker Talmadge orders his son to marry Sylvia Sweet (Andree Tourneur), the daughter of a business associate (J.W. Early), but Sylvia disapproves of Dick's worthlessness, championing instead the romantic The Unknown. When Dick is unmasked in a fight against one of his father's enemies, Sylvia changes her mind and they are married.
