A terrorist faction sets out to send their message to the world -- once they figure out what it is and how to do it -- in this black comedy. Artemio is an out-of-work blade sharpener who makes the acquaintance of Dino, a passionate but inept radical leftist who has sworn allegiance to Karl Marx and Eva Peron. Without much else going on in his life, Artemio agrees to join Dino's terrorist faction; his fellow enemies of the state include a fanatical libertarian, a former soldier with more blood lust than he knows what to do with, and a naïve French woman who soon becomes infatuated with Artemio. Under Dino's guidance, the group begins planning a series of violent actions, but they boast more bluster than practical skill, and they soon prove to be more of a threat to themselves than to bourgeois society or the standing order. The Stubborn Ones was screened at the Venice Film Festival on September 8, 2001, three days before international terrorism would cease to be a subject of fun in much of the world.
