Sam Gardner (Will Rogers) sells his ranch in Arizona and travels to Chicago with his young son, Billy (Jimmy Rogers). Almost immediately, Gardner is swindled out of his money by a couple of sharpers, but he doesn't go after them because he figures that by the time they are captured, the money already would have been spent. So he goes to stay in a modest boarding house, where Jane Ingraham (Irene Rich) takes an interest in him and his boy. To gather together some funds, Gardner heads to a gambling hall, where he meets Kittie Hinch (James Mason), a mean-spirited gambler who takes a liking to him. Hinch, however, hates the hall's proprietor, Jake Bloom (Lionel Belmore), who has been flirting with his wife, Florrie (Doris Pawn). Hinch kills Bloom, but circumstantial evidence points to Gardner. Gardner is arrested, but his cool, earthy demeanor confounds the police. Once Hinch crosses the border into Mexico, he has Florrie explain that he is the real killer, and Gardner is freed. He and Jane unite.
