The 1908 film The Spoilers was not based on the novel by Rex Beach. In fact, there is some doubt that the film was actually titled The Spoilers. This was the name bestowed upon the film by the trade magazine Variety reviewer, who noted that the projectionist at the Unique Theater in Manhattan started the film after the opening credit title. The story revolves around a swarthy longshoreman, who for unclear reasons intends to dynamite an anchored ship in New York harbor. Hiring several divers to do his dirty work, the villain skulks off to a cave to await the "report" of his skullduggery. Instead, his plans are foiled by the police, whereupon the disgruntled longshoreman kills himself.
