The critic for Variety took the Selig studio to task for depicting in vivid detail the villains' modus operandi in The Smuggler's Game. The item being smuggled is opium, meaning that most of the characters are Chinese (in the tradition of the racist cinema of the era). What really offended the Variety critic were the scenes in an opium den, wherein women and children were subjected to "pipe dreams." The plot, such as it was, concerned the heroine's blind love for the head of the smugglers. Despite the most damning evidence, the dimwitted girl never catches on to her sweetheart's profession until it is nearly too late.
