Produced by Charles Urban, The Sleuth and the Wig was rollicking, no-think entertainment. The heroine is the chubby wife of a policeman. While preparing to go shopping, the wife briefly removes her lavish wig, which is promptly snatched by the family dog. The wig is recovered by the husband and his fellow officers, all of whom assume that the wife has met with foul play. The cops spend the rest of the picture tracking down nonexistent clues, while wifey sits sullenly at home, unable to go out in public without her hairpiece. The misunderstanding is "resolved" with a climactic slapstick donnybrook.
