At 45 minutes, the Japanese Sleepy Family is just long enough to be good. The plot is set in motion when a tradesman's faithful horse dies. Unable to provide for his family without a horse, the father is forced to become a day laborer, while everyone else in the family is likewise reduced to menial labor. Because they have to work day and night to make ends meet, the family never has enough sleep. Hoping to keep his plight secret from friends and family, the father is disgraced when his youngest son wins an essay contest with his piece on "The Sleepy Family." But disaster turns to happiness when, through the outpouring of support and sympathy from those around them, the family realizes that as long as they're loved, they are never truly poor.
