Produced by Chicago's Essanay Studios, The Sleeping Tonic is all about a young insomniac. The hero's doctor offers a vial of sleeping powders as a solution. The anxious young man consumes the entire mixture all at once, whereupon he is incapable of staying awake. For the rest of the film (which isn't very long), the silly slumberer nods off at the most inopportune times in the most inappropriate places, including -- at one point -- a public fountain. Even the splashing waters fail to waken the poor sap, who when last we see him is peacefully snoozing at the bottom of the fountain.
