The Civil War was only some four decades in the past when Pathe's The Slave's Vengeance was filmed. Mercilessly beaten on the orders of his master, a slave (played by a white man in blackface) gets even by kidnapping the master's little daughter. He squirrels the girl away in a remote shack, while the master pulls out the bloodhounds and gives chase. Upon being rescued, the child pleads with her father to spare the life of her abductor. A happy ending ensues, but if the review by the trade magazine Variety was any indication, this denouement did not meet with the approval of the all-white movie audiences of the time.
