The Russian Revolution of 1917 was far from over when this multi-reel documentary was released in America in August of that year. In lieu of actual footage of the rebellion in progress, the film focused on traditional combat clips, culled from various WWI documentaries. The aftermath of the revolution was represented by a symbolic montage, showing a "parade of the dead" in tribute to the martyrs to the Cause. Understandably, audiences in 1917 were disappointed by The Russian Revolution, which offered little in the way of the Revolution and not much that was discernibly Russian. A Variety critic was far more impressed by the film's live musical accompaniment, which offered a medley of familiar Russian compositions.
