While novelist Don Emerson (Earl Metcalfe) is working on his latest book, he encounters Mary Allison (Ormi Hawley), who is the physical embodiment of one of his characters. His interest in her escalates when his wife, Alice (Rosetta Brice) receives a large inheritance. She starts throwing money around and gets caught up in the social whirl. Don finds Mary's simple life more appealing and leaves Alice for her. But Alice is sorry for her behavior, and she asks her lawyer (William Turner) for advice. He suggests that she offer Mary money to go away. But the check she sends to Mary is returned, so Alice goes over to her house herself. Don, meanwhile, is slowly beginning to realize that his affair with Mary is only a "phantom happiness." He overhears Alice and Mary talking, and Mary's refusal to go away. After Alice is gone, he breaks up with Mary, and then returns home to the repentant Alice.
