Released in America by the Great Northern Film Company, The Opium Smoker appears to have been German in origin. The title character is Hugo, the wastrel son of aristocratic Baron Kaufmann. While experiencing one of his drug-induced nightmares, Hugo imagines that his sweetheart will be stolen away by his brother Ernest, and that he, Hugo, will be dead and buried on Ernest's wedding day. Shortly thereafter, the Baron dies in a freak accident, and the bulk of his estate goes to Ernest, with Hugo receiving a considerably smaller weekly income. Scheming to do away with Ernest so as to come into full possession of the family fortune, Hugo succeeds only in making his horrific "pipe dream" come true.
