The title character in this Pathe tearjerker desperately hopes to hold onto his job, despite his increasing infirmity. Ultimately, however, the old longshoreman is unable to find work along the waterfront. In desperation, he turns to thievery, stealing a loaf of bread from a little girl. Frightened by the assault, the child falls into the water. The old man rescues the girl, proving once and for all that he's still worth his salt; alas, the excitement proves too much for his already weakened heart. The Old Longshoreman was originally released in tandem with the Pathe travelogue A New South Wales Gold Mine.
