Before abandoning acting altogether in favor of screenwriting and directing, Crane Wilbur performed double duty as star and writer of such three-reelers as The Mystery of Carter Breene. The plot hinges upon the behavior (or lack of behavior) of three main characters: a brilliant detective, a beautiful girl, and a hollow-eyed drug addict. A murder occurs and the wrong man is accused. On the brink of execution, the hapless fellow is rescued through the diligence of the detective. As a reward, the latter-day Sherlock Holmes wins the girl. Crane Wilbur would continue to write variations of this same story throughout the remainder of his career.
