Upon graduating from college, the son of a carnival huckster turns into an insufferable snob. Deserting his friends, family and wife, the son begins travelling in high-society circles, keeping company with a "woman of the world." Alas, he soon begins living beyond his means and depletes his bank account at the gambling tables. In desperation, he returns to his father's carnival and tries to steal the receipt box. This is hard enough for the father to bear, but when he discovers that the son has dumped his wife in favor of another woman, it's too much. The old "carney" breaks up his son's romance and beats the boy soundly, casting him out into the streets. Reduced to begging, the son finally begs forgiveness from those whom he's wronged. Filmed in France by Pathe, The Mountebank's Son offers a bizarre interpretation of French divorce laws when the son dissolves his first marriage merely by sending his wife a letter!
