The Million was adapted from a successful stage play by Henry W. Savage. The film's star was Edward Abeles. Abeles plays a crooked Baron, who, to elude the authorities, poses as an artist. While escaping the artist's studio, the Baron slips on a smock which happens to contain a million-dollar lottery ticket. The smock is eventually lost, forcing the Baron to adopt a dizzying series of disguises -- Jewish milliner, newspaper reporter, Italian tenor, and female nightclub singer -- to retrieve the precious fabric. Edward Abeles was what was known as a "protean" player, or quick-change artist, and The Million provided him ample opportunity to show off his peculiar speciality.
