The Japanese The Man Called Demon illustrates explicitly the corrupting influence of money and power. The "hero" is a poor man who is forced by circumstance to take over a legal house of prostitution in the early 1900s. As he grows wealthier and more influential, the man also becomes irredeemably evil. Played against this drama is the expansion of the brothel, with details drawn from factual accounts of the era. Not at all exploitational despite its lurid plotline, The Man Called Demon was Japan's offering to the 1957 Karlovy Vary Film Festival.
