Filmmaker Jonathan Ben Efrat examines the lives of Palestinians struggling to survive in Israel in this documentary. Dozens of undocumented Palestinian laborers working in Tel Aviv cannot afford housing and have moved into an abandoned shopping mall. Victims of both poverty and prejudice, the men who stay there try to make the decaying mall seem like some sort of home, but the building is dirty and dangerous, and many must sleep in underground shelters without running water or ventilation. Hakanyon (aka The Mall) was screened in competition at the 2007 Rotterdam International Film Festival.
