The "Who Pays?" series filmed by the Balboa company was made up of three reel morality plays in which the foolish actions of the principals created misfortune for others. Each episode starred Ruth Roland and Henry King (who was still a ways off from becoming a renowned film director). In this entry, Roland plays a spoiled young woman who knows nothing but wealth and luxury. But the day comes when she finds her comfortable life coming to an end. Threatened with poverty, she agrees to wed a wealthy old invalid (David Gilfeather), although she doesn't love him at all. She manages to put up with the sham of her marriage -- just barely -- until she falls in love with the handsome young doctor (King) who tends to her husband. In any other motion picture, the old man would have conveniently died, but here the old man jealously watches his wife's fascination with the doctor, while the young people are miserable because the wife is tied to the old man; everyone pays for the! shallow materialism the wife initially displayed.
