The Lost Empire was the second of a series of travelogues produced by the enterprising Captain Edward A. Salisbury. From 1921 through 1927, Salisbury and his entourage undertook an expedition to the South Seas, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and Arabia, ever in search of the most unusual and exotic sights. This entry in the Lost Empire series focuses on man-eating pygmies, a tribe of Christians in one of the remotest parts of Africa, and the "hidden kingdom" of Abyssinia (aka Ethiopia). Salisbury's writing partner Merian C. Cooper was also along for the ride, as was ace cinematographer Ernest B. Schoedsack. After completing their duties for Captain Salisbury, Cooper and Schoedsack formed a partnership that would eventually result in such classic escapist films as Most Dangerous Game and King Kong.
