John Fox, Jr.'s novel of Civil War-era Kentucky was filmed several times. This version featured Jack Pickford as Chad Buford, the boy from the Cumberland mountains. Chad is saved from a cruel guardian (H. Milton Ross) and eventually comes to live with the Turner clan. He eases into a comfortable existence, which includes a romance with the Turner daughter, Melissa (Pauline Starke), but then the Civil War breaks out. Unlike most of his friends, Chad fights for the Union, and the years of battle serve to make a man out of him. After the war's end, Chad returns home, and Melissa unselfishly gives him up to her rival Margaret (Clara Horton). Of note to silent film fanatics is the 1928 version, which starred Richard Barthelmess as Chad.
