Huey Long (Edward Asner), one of the great demagogues of the Great Depression, lies in a hospital bed, fatally wounded by an assassin's bullet. At Long's side are his wife (Diane Kagan) and brother (Fred Cook), who reflect on his tumultuous rise to power in Louisiana politics. Long's populist programs and rousing slogans help him get elected governor and then senator. But as he builds up the schools, hospitals and highways of his state, he also gains an increasing number of enemies.
