Alice Brady starred in this romantic melodrama about a couple of poor immigrants prospering in the New World. On her way to join her sister in America, Polish Marya Nisko (Brady) falls in love with fellow passenger Sascha Rabinoff (Jason Robards). Arriving in New York, Marya discovers that her sister (Martha McGraw) lives in abject poverty and instead obtains a job as a maid for upper class Mildred St. John (Betty Carsdale). She is a failure almost from the start but an introduction to a theatrical manager (Lawrence Ross) leads to a life on the wicked stage. Meanwhile, Sascha attracts the attention of a wealthy industrialist (Fuller Mellish), who is intrigued by his idea of opening a home for immigrants. Through the home, Sascha and Marya are finally reunited. A major star of the early silent era, stage veteran Alice Brady would enjoy even more success as a character comedienne in the sound era.
