Running less than 5 minutes, Selig's The Hungry Actor is not so much a film as an extended joke. Arriving in a small town, a provincial actor immediately tries to cadge a meal from the gullible townsfolk. He resorts to stealing a pie and a tray of biscuits from the windowsill of a local housewife, but the food proves to be thoroughly inedible. Finally, by guess and by gosh, the hero is treated to a sumptuous repast. Perhaps the average filmgoer couldn't relate to the plight of the film's protagonist, but the average actor certainly could!
